Promoting Traffic Safety: Practical Defensive Riding Course at National Dong Hwa University
National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) is located some distance from the city center, with Zhongzheng Road at the Zhiqiang Gate serving as a vital commercial hub with heavy traffic. This makes traffic safety a priority. In line with the university’s commitment to social responsibility, NDHU’s Office of Social Engagement, General Education Center, and the Hualien County Police Department’s Traffic Police Unit have collaborated to integrate traffic safety education into the general education curriculum. This initiative positions NDHU as a trailblazer among higher education institutions in Taiwan.
To enhance students’ awareness of motorcycle safety, a practical on-road riding training session was held on December 23. The traffic police unit dispatched 10 heavy motorcycles to lead students on a route starting from NDHU, along County Road 11 to Fengbin, through Guangfeng Road, and returning via Provincial Highway 9. The route covered a mix of county and township roads, as well as flat and mountainous terrain. Students gained hands-on experience in adjusting riding posture and observing precautions for different road conditions. Over the semester, they acquired a comprehensive understanding of safe motorcycle operation, helping to reduce traffic accidents.
The course emphasized motorcycle safety and defensive riding techniques, with particular focus on common causes of motorcycle accidents. Through case studies, students explored issues such as improper turns and violations of traffic signals and signs. The curriculum also incorporated topics like defensive driving, accident prevention, and basic vehicle maintenance, reinforcing road safety awareness.
Participants found the course highly beneficial. They expressed that understanding proper traffic practices and adopting a safety-first mindset can improve self-protection and reduce the frequency of accidents in areas near the university. The course not only aims to protect students from traffic-related harm but also encourages them to share traffic safety knowledge with their families, promoting a culture of road safety.
